In their own words…”The Pantone Colour of the Year programme engages the design community and colour enthusiasts in conversation around colour, highlighting the relationship between colour and culture. Pantone selects a colour each year that captures the global zeitgeist – the Colour of the Year expresses a global mood and an attitude, reflecting a collective desire in the form of a single, distinct hue.”
This year, they chose…..brown.
Not just any brown mind you, “Mocha Mousse” is the official shade of 2025. A “warming brown hue imbued with richness. It nurtures us with its suggestion of the delectable qualities of chocolate and coffee, answering our desire for comfort.” Sounds great.
As we know, colour is incredibly important in communications. If a picture paints a thousand words, colour evokes emotions, helps forms subconscious associations and suggests a mood. Given all this, how do the AJ team feel about Mocha Mousse?
Mocha Mousse according to AJ
“Subtle and so malleable – you can use it across multiple products/themes etc.”
“It gives an elegant, minimalist and calming vibe.”
“It makes me hungry but I’m not sure why.”
“I like it, it’s soothing, comforting and it works well with other colours.”
“It just makes me think of mud and is a bit of a rubbish colour.”
“Essentially an upgrade from cream. I’d use it instead of cream for a change that seems familiar rather than distracting.”
“Not going to lie, I think it’s a gross colour.”
Mixed but strong feelings
As you can see, the AJ jury is out as to whether or not it gets our collective “thumbs up” but one thing is for sure we all have strong opinions on Mocha Mousse. And that’s kind of the point. Colour gets deep into our subconscious. Our brains make instant, visceral judgments based on colour alone which is why it is so important to get this right in our advertising and marketing communications.
Colourways in advertising are about more than just what looks nice on the design. When our studio team are choosing colours they are careful to select shades that symbolise, inspire and motivate.
